Unsecured or poorly restrained loads are a leading cause of road incidents, vehicle damage and injuries in Australia's transport sector, and under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) responsibility for load restraint extends to loaders and packers — not just drivers.
The unit is delivered together with TLID0015 Load and unload goods/cargo in a half-day session and is relevant to warehousing, rural merchandise, grain handling, machinery dealers and transport operations throughout the Darling Downs, where farm machinery, livestock equipment and bulk freight are loaded and despatched every day.
What You'll Learn
- Prepare to secure cargo and containers — identify the load, its characteristics and the restraint method required
- Select and inspect lashing equipment — ratchet straps, chains, binders, load bars, dunnage and friction mats — before use
- Lash and unlash cargo safely, applying the correct number and placement of restraints for the load
- Protect cargo from weather using tarps, covers and sealed containers
- Pack and unpack cargo to workplace procedures, checking for damage and discrepancies
- Apply the Load Restraint Guide and HVNL loading requirements to everyday tasks
- Follow workplace WHS procedures and report hazards or damaged equipment
Assessment Method
Assessment combines a practical demonstration (participants secure a sample load using straps and/or chains, protect it from weather and unlash it safely) with a written or verbal knowledge assessment covering load restraint requirements and equipment inspection.
Prerequisites
None — open to all workers involved in freight handling, receival and despatch. No prior transport or logistics training is required.
