C Class — Medical Driving Assessments
Occupational therapy fitness-to-drive assessments for drivers whose medical condition, injury or age may affect their ability to hold a C Class (car) licence in Queensland.
About This Service
C Class Medical Driving Assessments at Dalby Training Centre are conducted in partnership with qualified occupational therapy driving assessors to determine whether a driver is fit to hold and use their current Queensland C Class (car) licence following a medical event, age-related decline or acquired disability. Driving independence is critically important across the Darling Downs, where public transport options are limited and the ability to drive is often central to employment, family life and community participation.
Our assessments provide an independent, evidence-based report that can be used to support your GP's Austroads medical fitness report, satisfy Transport and Main Roads (TMR) conditional licence requirements, or provide you with rehabilitation recommendations to help you return to safe driving following an injury or illness.
What the Assessment Includes
- An off-road clinical assessment of vision, cognition, reaction time, physical function and vehicle control capability
- An on-road driving assessment conducted under the observation of a qualified driving assessor
- Evaluation of whether vehicle modifications (hand controls, left-foot accelerator, panoramic mirrors) could support safe driving
- A written report provided to your GP, specialist and/or TMR for licence decision-making purposes
- Rehabilitation recommendations where driving can be resumed with appropriate training or vehicle modification
- Advice on driving cessation and alternative transport options where a return to driving is not safe
Assessment Process
All assessments are conducted by appointment. You will need a referral from your treating GP or specialist in most cases, and you must bring your current Queensland driver's licence to the appointment. The assessment typically takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the clinical complexity of your situation. A written report will be provided within a specified timeframe following the assessment.
Who Requires This Assessment
A medical driving assessment may be required or recommended when a GP or specialist has identified a medical condition that could affect your ability to drive safely. Common triggers include:
- Stroke, TIA or other acquired neurological conditions affecting cognitive or physical function
- Dementia or age-related cognitive decline requiring licence review by TMR or your treating physician
- Orthopaedic injuries or surgeries affecting upper or lower limb function required for vehicle control
- Vision loss or significant changes in visual acuity or visual field
- Cardiac events or epilepsy where a return-to-driving period has been advised
- Older drivers (generally 85+) referred by TMR for an independent fitness-to-drive evaluation
