This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a light vehicle in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

On mine sites, construction sites and processing facilities across the Darling Downs, light vehicle incidents — including collision with heavy plant, pedestrians and site infrastructure — are among the most frequent and preventable workplace injuries.
This training meets the specific site access and competency requirements for light vehicle operators in resources and industrial workplaces and is commonly required as part of site induction for coal seam gas, mining and processing facilities in the Surat Basin and wider Queensland.
What You'll Learn
- Conduct a thorough pre-start vehicle inspection using an industry-standard checklist
- Understand and comply with site traffic management plans, speed limits and intersection rules
- Manage interactions between light vehicles and heavy mobile plant — giving way, exclusion zones and blind spots
- Apply fatigue management principles for long-distance and shift-work driving in the resources sector

Assessment Method
Assessment is through a written knowledge questionnaire covering site traffic rules, vehicle inspection requirements and hazard recognition. Practical elements may be assessed through scenario discussion or, where a vehicle is available, a brief pre-start inspection demonstration.
Prerequisites
Participants must hold a current driver's licence for the class of vehicle they intend to operate on site.
