Course Overview
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to work within the command, control and coordination structure of an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO). An ECO's priority is the safety of facility occupants and visitors during an emergency which means ECO members are responsible for pre-emergency, emergency and post emergency actions. It includes undertake pre-emergency planning, taking appropriate actions in an emergency and assisting with post emergency activities.
The unit has been developed to cover the facilities as specified in Australian Standard (AS) 3745 and AS4083. For this unit, as covered by AS3745 and/or AS4083, occupants are people attending a facility on a permanent or temporary basis such as an employee, contractor, student or resident, but not a visitor or patient and a facility is a building, structure or workplace that is, or may be, occupied by people (occupants).

This half-day course is required under AS 3745:2010 Planning for Emergencies in Facilities and meets Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation requirements for designated warden roles. Participants learn how to respond to workplace emergencies — including fire, bomb threats, medical emergencies and severe weather — in a coordinated team setting.
Delivered at our Dalby training facility, the course covers both theoretical frameworks and practical scenario exercises, ensuring wardens understand their specific responsibilities and can act confidently during a workplace emergency evacuation or other critical incident.
What You'll Learn
- Understand the structure and responsibilities of a workplace Emergency Control Organisation
- Identify the types of emergencies that may occur in a workplace and the appropriate response protocols
- Perform area warden duties — sweep checks, directing occupants and reporting to the chief warden
- Operate emergency communication systems, including intercoms, public address systems and two-way radios
- Use portable firefighting equipment to contain initial-stage fires in the warden role
- Coordinate evacuation of occupants including persons with disabilities
- Participate in emergency drills and contribute to post-incident debriefs
Assessment Method
Competency is assessed through participation in a simulated emergency scenario, observation of warden duties in practice, and a short written knowledge assessment covering legislative requirements, ECO structure and emergency response procedures.
Prerequisites
None — open to all workers nominated as wardens. No prior emergency response training is required, though MSMWHS212 firefighting equipment training is recommended as a complementary course.
