Course Overview
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.
It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

This course is essential for workers operating in petrochemical, coal seam gas, processing and resources environments throughout the Darling Downs and Surat Basin, where the presence of methane, hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide and oxygen displacement pose serious risks to life.
The training emphasises the ability to interpret real-time readings, understand their significance and make safe work decisions based on monitoring data — a critical skill before any confined space entry, hot work permit issuance or process plant maintenance activity is undertaken.
What You'll Learn
- Identify common atmospheric hazards including flammable gases (LEL/UEL), oxygen deficiency (below 19.5%) and enrichment (above 23.5%), and toxic gases including H₂S, CO and SO₂
- Select and operate a calibrated multi-gas monitor (4-gas and specific toxic gas configurations)
- Perform bump testing and full calibration of gas monitoring equipment in accordance with manufacturer requirements
- Apply correct sampling techniques — including remote sampling probe use for confined spaces and stratified atmospheres
- Interpret monitor readings and action levels, and know when to abort entry or work activities
- Record gas test results in compliance with permit to work and confined space documentation requirements
- Understand the limitations of gas monitors, including sensor cross-sensitivity and response time factors
Assessment Method
Assessment includes a practical gas monitor operation exercise (bump test, calibration verification, atmosphere sampling sequence and reading interpretation) and a written knowledge assessment covering atmospheric hazards, action levels and documentation requirements. All assessment is conducted at our Dalby facility.
Prerequisites
Participants should ideally hold RIIWHS202E Confined Spaces or have experience working in environments where atmospheric monitoring is conducted. No formal prerequisite is mandatory — contact us to discuss your background before enrolling.
