HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid covers responding to an emergency situation, applying first aid procedures, coordinating first aid activities until medical assistance arrives, communicating the details of the incident and reviewing it afterwards.

What You'll Learn

  • Recognise and assess an emergency situation and ensure safety for yourself, bystanders and the casualty
  • Perform single-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR in accordance with ARC guidelines, and follow the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Manage unconscious casualties, both breathing and non-breathing
  • Manage anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, shock, nosebleeds, wounds, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, and envenomation using pressure immobilisation
  • Manage life-threatening bleeding using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
  • Conduct a secondary survey assessment and assess vital signs, including respirations, pulse, temperature and level of consciousness
  • Coordinate a team responding to a multiple casualty incident, including basic triage, use of resources and moving casualties
  • Convey incident details to emergency services and complete an accurate verbal and written incident report
  • Review the incident, and recognise the possible psychological impacts on yourself and other rescuers

Assessment Method

Participants must demonstrate the tasks set out in the unit, including at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single-rescuer CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, at least 2 minutes of ventilation and at least 2 minutes of compression during a two-rescuer procedure, and at least 2 minutes of single-rescuer CPR on an infant manikin. Participants also respond to at least two simulated first aid incidents, one medical and one trauma, and coordinate a team responding to a multiple casualty incident. Participants must also demonstrate the knowledge the unit requires.

Performance evidence may be collected in a simulated environment that provides realistic scenarios and reflects real-life situations.
