Course Overview

Non-accredited awareness training

This is an awareness course, not a nationally recognised unit of competency. Participants receive a Statement of Participation rather than a Statement of Attainment.

NHVR Load Mass and Dimension Awareness Training provides a practical, half-day overview of Australia's mass and dimension limits for heavy vehicles under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). Overloaded and oversized heavy vehicles cause disproportionate damage to roads, bridges and infrastructure — and they are significantly more dangerous in the event of a crash. This training ensures that anyone involved in loading or despatching heavy vehicles understands the legal limits that apply and the consequences of non-compliance.

Relevant across the Darling Downs and Surat Basin, where large volumes of agricultural produce, mining consumables, cotton, grain and livestock equipment are transported by semi-trailer and B-double, this course supports businesses in implementing a proactive mass management system and discharging their Chain of Responsibility obligations under the HVNL.

What You'll Learn

  • Understand the standard mass limits for common heavy vehicle combinations (rigid, semi-trailer, B-double) under the HVNL
  • Identify the general dimension limits for height, width, length and rear overhang
  • Understand when an Over-Dimension permit is required and the process for obtaining one from the NHVR or TMR
  • Recognise how axle group mass limits — steer, drive and trailer axles — interact with gross vehicle mass (GVM) and aggregate trailer mass (ATM)
  • Apply basic load distribution principles to keep a vehicle within legal axle mass limits
  • Understand the role of weighbridges, roadside enforcement cameras and NHVR inspectors
  • Identify the penalties for mass and dimension offences and how Chain of Responsibility applies to loaders and consignors

Assessment Method

Participants complete a short written knowledge check covering standard mass limits, dimension limits and the CoR obligations of loaders and consignors. A Statement of Participation is issued upon completion. This course is an awareness program — for a nationally recognised qualification in mass management, consider pairing it with TLIF0009 Chain of Responsibility.

Prerequisites

None — open to all participants. This course is suitable for anyone involved in loading, dispatching or managing heavy vehicle transport, regardless of prior industry experience.
