HLTAID012 — Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
Specialised first aid training designed for early childhood educators, school staff and outside school hours care (OSHC) services — delivered in Dalby, QLD.
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

This course builds on the standard HLTAID011 Provide First Aid unit with additional content focused on paediatric emergencies, asthma and anaphylaxis management, and documentation obligations relevant to regulated care environments.
Delivered face-to-face at our Dalby facility, training is interactive and scenario-based, allowing educators to practise responding to real situations that arise in childcare and school settings. The certificate is valid for three years, and the included CPR component is recommended for annual renewal.
What You'll Learn
- Apply DRSABCD and perform CPR on adults, children and infants to current ARC guidelines
- Operate an AED and manage paediatric cardiac arrest scenarios
- Recognise and manage asthma using a spacer and reliever inhaler
- Manage severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis using an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen)
- Respond to febrile convulsions and seizures in a child care environment
- Provide initial treatment for head injuries, fractures and soft tissue injuries in children
- Follow regulatory requirements for incident reporting, notification and documentation
- Manage the emotional needs of children and parents during and after an emergency
Assessment Method
Competency is assessed through hands-on practical demonstrations (including paediatric CPR, AED use, asthma and anaphylaxis management) and written knowledge questions. Scenario-based role plays are used to assess decision-making in an education and care context. All assessments take place on the day of training.

None — open to all participants. Individuals already holding HLTAID011 may be eligible for a shorter refresher pathway — contact us to discuss your options.
