HLTAID010 — Provide basic emergency life support
Foundational emergency response training, delivered together with HLTAID011 Provide First Aid as a one-day course — DRSABCD action plan, managing an unconscious patient and recovery position technique.
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Delivered together with HLTAID011 Provide First Aid as a one-day course, it covers the DRSABCD action plan, airway management, management of an unconscious casualty and the correct application of the recovery position — skills that are relevant across all workplace and community settings throughout the Darling Downs region.
At Dalby Training Centre this unit is delivered together with HLTAID011 Provide First Aid in a single training day, so participants leave with a Statement of Attainment for both units.
What You'll Learn
- Apply the DRSABCD emergency action plan in a systematic and confident manner
- Assess an unconscious casualty for responsiveness, airway patency and normal breathing
- Open and maintain a clear airway using head-tilt/chin-lift and modified jaw thrust techniques
- Place an unconscious breathing casualty in the correct recovery position
- Perform basic CPR sequences until AED or professional help is available
- Recognise signs of deterioration and communicate effectively with emergency services (000)
- Document an emergency response and complete basic incident records
Assessment Method
Assessment is through direct observation of practical skills performance (airway management, recovery position, CPR initiation) and a short written or verbal knowledge questionnaire. All assessment is completed on the day of training at our Dalby facility.
Prerequisites
None — this course is open to all participants. No prior first aid training is required.
