Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Delivered together with HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support as a one-day course, it equips participants with the skills and confidence to respond effectively to a wide range of medical emergencies until professional help arrives. Delivered face-to-face at our Dalby facility, training combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on practice to ensure real-world readiness.
The unit meets the requirements of Safe Work Australia and aligns with current Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, ensuring your certificate is accepted across all Australian states and territories. Certificates are valid for three years, with CPR recommended annually.
What You'll Learn
- Apply the DRSABCD action plan to assess and manage emergency situations
- Perform CPR on adults, children and infants using current ARC guidelines
- Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively
- Manage choking in conscious and unconscious patients
- Control severe bleeding using direct pressure, wound packing and tourniquets
- Recognise and manage shock, including anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock
- Provide initial management of fractures, dislocations and spinal injuries
- Treat burns, scalds, poisoning, bites and stings in an Australian context
Assessment Method
Assessment is conducted through a combination of practical demonstration and written questioning. Participants must demonstrate competency in CPR and AED operation on a manikin, as well as scenario-based first aid responses. A short written or verbal knowledge assessment covers underpinning theory. All assessments are conducted on the day of training.
Prerequisites
None — this course is open to all participants aged 14 years and over. No prior first aid experience or medical background is required. Participants should be physically capable of performing CPR (kneeling on the floor and performing chest compressions).
