Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to enter and work in confined spaces in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Confined space fatalities account for a disproportionate number of workplace deaths in Australia, and the majority of those deaths involve would-be rescuers who enter without proper training or equipment. This course addresses that risk directly by covering the full confined space entry system — from hazard identification and atmosphere testing through to permit completion, standby person duties and emergency rescue.
Relevant to resources, construction, utilities and processing industries throughout the Darling Downs and Queensland, this training is a regulatory requirement before any person enters a confined space at work.
What You'll Learn
- Define confined spaces and identify when a space meets the legislative definition under the WHS Regulation
- Identify atmospheric, engulfment, entrapment and energy hazards associated with confined spaces
- Interpret and complete a confined space entry permit (including isolation verification)
- Operate a multi-gas monitor to test for oxygen deficiency/enrichment, flammable gases (LEL) and toxic gases
- Apply continuous forced ventilation principles and natural ventilation limitations
- Perform standby person duties, including communication protocols and rescue initiation
- Conduct a non-entry rescue using tripod and winch retrieval equipment
- Understand SCBA and supplied-air requirements for immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) atmospheres
Assessment Method
Assessment includes a practical confined space entry exercise (using a training confined space structure), gas monitor operation, permit completion and a written knowledge assessment. All components are completed at our Dalby facility on the training day.
Prerequisites
None — open to all workers. Participants must be physically capable of entering a confined space and should not be claustrophobic. Participants working in petrochemical or gas industry environments may also require MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres.
