TLID0020 — Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
Practical manual handling training — safe lifting technique, load assessment, posture management and manual task risk assessment for transport and logistics workers.
Course Overview
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to shift materials safely using manual handling methods.
It includes assessing the risks associated with relocating the load, planning the relocation process and carrying out the relocation in accordance with the plan. Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations concerning the manual handling and movement of loads.
View TLID0020 on training.gov.au →TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods trains workers in the transport and logistics industry to identify, assess and control the musculoskeletal risks associated with manual handling. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) — including back injuries, sprains and strains — are consistently Australia's most common and costly category of workplace injury, and they are particularly prevalent in warehouse, depot, delivery and freight-handling environments where workers lift, carry, push and pull heavy or awkward loads repeatedly throughout a shift.
This half-day course goes beyond generic lifting technique to develop a risk assessment mindset, ensuring workers can recognise when a task has become unsafe and apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or reduce manual task risks in their specific transport and logistics work environment.
What You'll Learn
- Identify the four key manual task risk factors — force, awkward posture, repetition and vibration
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to manual task hazards: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative and PPE
- Demonstrate correct lifting technique for floor-to-bench, bench-to-shelf and asymmetric loads
- Assess a load's weight, size, shape and grip quality before attempting to lift or carry it
- Apply team lift procedures and use mechanical aids — trolleys, hand trucks, pallet jacks and conveyor systems
- Recognise early warning signs of MSD and understand reporting obligations under the WHS Act 2011 (QLD)
- Participate in a manual task risk assessment for a common task in a transport and logistics setting
Assessment Method
Assessment combines practical observation of safe manual handling technique during a lifting exercise with a written or verbal knowledge assessment covering risk factors, hierarchy of controls and the use of mechanical aids. All assessment is completed on the day at our Dalby facility.
Prerequisites
None — open to all workers. No prior manual handling training is required. This course can be delivered at your workplace for groups of 6 or more — contact us to discuss on-site training options.
