People working, operating or who regularly travel to an onshore or offshore hydrocarbon/petrochemical installation or facility or major hazard facility may require this competency.

This half-day course addresses extinguisher selection, safe deployment technique and the critical decision of when to fight and when to evacuate — skills directly relevant to worksites across the Darling Downs, including agricultural, petrochemical and processing facilities.
The course includes a practical live-fire or simulated fire exercise, giving participants the hands-on confidence to act decisively in an emergency without taking unnecessary risks. The unit is commonly combined with emergency warden training or included in site-specific WHS induction programs.
What You'll Learn
- Identify the components of the fire triangle and how to interrupt combustion
- Classify fires by type — Class A (solid), B (flammable liquid), C (gas), E (electrical) and F (cooking oils)
- Select the appropriate portable extinguisher for each fire class
- Operate water, CO2, dry powder, foam and wet chemical extinguishers correctly
- Apply the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) for effective fire suppression
- Assess fire size and risk to determine whether attack or evacuation is appropriate
- Comply with relevant Queensland WHS regulations and workplace fire safety procedures
Assessment Method
Assessment combines a practical demonstration of extinguisher operation (including correct selection and PASS technique applied to a simulated or controlled fire scenario) with a written knowledge assessment covering fire classification and safety decisions. All assessment is conducted on the day.
Prerequisites
None — open to all workers. No prior fire safety training is required. Participants should be physically capable of operating portable firefighting equipment.
